This is a classic bird feeder design. However, I've made a few improvement on the idea. read below.
What makes this bird feeder so special? First of all, I make these one at a time in my shop here in Vermont. The cedar is locally sourced and air dried for stability. All loose knots, bark and unstable parts of the wood are cut away and only the best parts are used in their construction. You're getting a unique, one of a kind item not found anywhere else.
-One special feature I included in my design that gives it that "Plus" in the heading is, the drain holes in the seed tray to allow water to drain out.that way the seed won't get wet and stay wet and contaminate the rest with mold and bacteria. Inspect these holes from time to time and clean them using anything thin enough to push trough them. Pipe cleaners and twisty ties are good enough for this purpose.
-Two, I've replaced the usual plastic/plexiglass panels for the sides of the seed box because, having had many feeders over the years the plastic always yellows, cracks and falls out eventually. The aromatic cedar costs a lot less too and this helps make the product more affordable. This does mean you can't see the seed level but if you're like me, you spend a lot of time watching the birds feeding and you'll know when the seed is getting low or gone just by the birds not being there.
-Just like all the other items I make, it's fastened together using weather proof exterior construction screws, not nails that let go after they get wet and dry over the years and split the wood. All the holes are predrilled before assembly. This also makes it easy to take apart and replace parts should the the stray bear or large rodent mangle it some day. They do that!.
-No paints, stains, oils or finishes are used so as not to contaminate the food or foul the air on hot days. Birds are very sensitive.
Mounting ideas are plentiful for these bird feeders. I'm working in a kit much like those I created for my blue bird houses. They will be pipe mounted to keep rodents from getting into the food. Stay tuned for that.
